Pont du Diable

It was the first refuge for Venitians during Lombards’ and Huns’ invasions, after the Roman Empire collapsed.
Torcello prospered in the 5th and 6th centuries. It had 20.000 inhabitants at that time. Malaria and mud made them leave to Venice

They threw off every stone to rebuild their houses on the Rialto. Only the Santa Maria Assunta remained, together with the Santa Fosca church and the council headquarters.

The Basilica was built in 639, it was then recasted different times until 1000.

It is a beautiful mix of Roman, Byzantine and Gothic architectures.

You can admire the Blessed Virgin and her child mosaics
